one of the smartest things you can do on Substack notes is pick the type of person you’d like to be as a stranger showing up first thing in the morning in the lives of other people you don’t know. Being able to fix people because let’s face it - you rock, is a great start. PS - don’t worry if you don’t already rock- there are lots of CS Lewis & or/Rambam quotes that do - and you can use a bunch of these to get started.
captain obvious is a great type of notes person too. Just say a bunch of really random shit that all of us already know. Let’s be honest, we’re not a super smart species, and we’re easily impressed, so use this to dominate Substack like Tony Robbins after two Frapucinnos too many. PS - think Frapucinno is an easy word to spell without spellcheck? You’re already light years ahead of the rest of us. Start hustling.
My Jewish Ju Jitsu guru often tells me, if I didn’t have such great hair for a middle aged dude, I could probably dominate in the JCC over 40 white belts competition and at least win a third place trophy without breaking much of a sweat. Between us, as a poet, I prefer to use pen and pixel in my suburban battles so i politely decline. Plus, everyone knows Saul Bernstein pays off the Cantor who doubles as the ref which makes the whole thing rigged from the start. I probably should work at the humble brag a bit more, that one didn’t quite feel right.
You ever see Jose Canseco in person? I have. in Vegas a bunch of years ago at a bar at like 3am. He was with his brother -also a very large man with a huge head. Having lived in Key West for a bunch of years, I played on a pick up Cuban softball team, and most of those guys were super nice, but surprisingly short and were huge Neil Diamond fans. Who knew? Anyway, the point is, don’t be this guy.
If you’re only reading Jewish content on Substack, good news! You see almost none of these types in your notes feed. Consider that a tiny but mighty win and a sign from the universe that maybe, just maybe, 2026 will be a better year for us.
